Lush soap is known for being made from natural ingredients, but how good is it for the environment? Is Lush soap biodegradable?

Not all Lush products are packaging-free, so they are not all biodegradable. While Lush strives to make their products eco-friendly, they are not all biodegradable.

Perhaps you wonder what Lush packaging is made from and how it affects the environment. To find out, check out the rest of this article.

What Are Lush Packaging Peanuts Made Of?

Have you ever ordered a Lush gift online? Knowing that Lush is an eco-friendly store, you may have wondered how your gift would arrive.

But seeing it nestled between packaging peanuts may make you feel a little disappointed. Aren’t packaging peanuts bad for the planet? Yes, they are, but Lush’s packaging peanuts are completely different.

Lush’s packaging peanuts are made from potato starch. They are 100% biodegradable.

That means, you could spill them out onto your compost bin and they will slowly decompose. But what about the rest of the gift wrap? The paper that comes in Lush gifts is made from recycled paper.

This makes your gift even more eco-friendly.

What about if you buy something from a Lush store? Then you’ll probably carry it home in a Lush paper bag.

These bags are made from 100% recycled paper. And the containers that you carry your soap in are also made from 100% recycled plastic.

Lush always encourages their clients to recycle the product packaging after they have used it.

Why Is Lush Not Ethical?

Many people question the ethicality of Lush soap products. But in all honesty, it is hard to put a label on how ethical something is.

What does being ethical or not really mean? There are lots of different ideas out there. Here are some things that Lush does that help it to operate in an ethical way.

  • Lush tries not to damage the planet with its trade practices
  • Lush puts in regulations that protect people with its trade practices
  • The company strives to enrich the lives of all of the people in contact with it. This includes the lives of those that grow the ingredients that are used in the products, those that package them, sell them, and use them.
  • The company will not test any of its products on animals. They only sell cruelty-free cosmetics.

Lush also tries to use ethical packaging practices. About half of their products can be taken home without packaging.

Their carrier bags are made from 100% recycled paper and their packaging peanuts are made from potato starch.

Their packaging bottles are also recycled bottles. They encourage their consumers to recycle all packaging after it is used.

So, after considering some of the practices of the business, what will you conclude? Do you think that Lush is an ethical company? As we stated before, there is no hard and fast rule for measuring how ethical a company is.

But considering the facts, most would conclude that it is in fact an ethical company.

Is Lush Full Of Chemicals?

Lush prides itself on being a company that strives to make products from natural ingredients. But what is the chemical content of their products? Are there any chemicals in Lush soap and shampoos? Yes, there are chemicals in Lush products.

But although these chemicals are present, Lush tries to be very selective about which ones they use.

Lush tries to follow these criteria when developing its products:

  • They make their products from fresh, organic fruit and vegetables. They choose suppliers that provide them with top-quality products.
  • All of their cosmetics are made from the finest essential oils
  • Although their products do contain chemicals, they use only what is necessary. They use only safe synthetics in their products.

Some of Lush’s favorite ingredients to put in their products are wheatgrass, blueberries, and seaweed. Why? Because these ingredients are high in antioxidants, minerals, and skin-softening properties. It’s these natural materials that work wonders on your hair and skin.

These ingredients are also full of vitamins and amino acids that nourish the body and skin.

So, what can we conclude about Lush products? Well, they do contain chemicals and there is no doubt about that.

But they only include safe synthetic ingredients in their products. But, we can also be sure that they contain plenty of natural ingredients that are beneficial for our bodies.

They try to source as many of their products locally as possible to reduce their carbon footprint.

Final Thoughts

Lush soap is popular amongst people that are looking for natural skincare solutions.

But it is also the first choice for those that want to look after their skin and hair and also do their bit for the environment. But some people doubt just how eco-friendly Lush really is.

Is Lush soap biodegradable?

As we have seen in this article, not all Lush soap is biodegradable. This is because not all Lush products are packaging-free so they cannot all be composted.

To recycle your Lush product appropriately, it is best you check the specific recycling instructions on the product’s label.
