When handling paperwork in large quantities, we’ll inevitably end up with a large number of paper clips and have no clue what to do with them.

Paperclips are so useful until we think they’re no longer needed.

The first thing we often think of is tossing them in the garbage, but we know that’s not sustainable.

The next thought will be throwing the clips in the recycling bin, but are paper clips recyclable?

According to the US Department of Energy, unlike staples, we must remove paper clips from any paper we are recycling.

So for any of us who’s ever felt confused about that issue, we now know the answer.

However, that is the short answer when considering if paper clips are recyclable. Generally, you can recycle them, just not with paper.

We’ve done some in-depth research and have all the answers for you below.

What Makes Paper Clips?

Most paper clips comprise steel wire, which is classified as a metal and hence technically recyclable, though not in your curbside recycling bin.

Paper clips that are left connected to paper do not obstruct the paper recycling process, but they are too small to be sorted with most metals; thus, they are unlikely to be recycled.

We can recycle paper clips as scrap metal in large quantities.

The best thing to do with paper clips initially is to wait until you have a large number.

Is It Possible to Get Rid of Paper Clips?

When it pertains to paper clips, we can easily throw them away.

However, because it is reusable, we recommend that you use it to its full potential before discarding it.

There are a variety of reasons we should discard paper clips for a variety of reasons.

One of the most important reasons is to stay safe at home.

If you have children, it’s not a good idea to leave paper clips within their reach.

They are unable to distinguish and may ingest it. Alternatively, you can place it in any of the body’s apertures.

Ensure you bag your paper clips when they’re no longer needed.

Please place them in a plastic or paper bag and securely close them.

Then you can take it outside to your bin. Make sure the container is always in a conspicuous location and that it is securely closed.

How Durable are Paper Clips?

You’re undoubtedly aware that we can reuse paper clips. However, you have no idea how long you will be able to utilize them.

The truth is that it all depends on the sort of paper clips you use.

Metal Paper Clips

Paper clips made of metals or steel are the most common.

Then there are those made of plastics and those made of sustainable wood pulp.

If you’re using metal paper clips, you should already know the answer.

As long as the paper clips are in good condition, you can use them. We can use this for years if you don’t bend it out of shape or misplace it.

Plastic Paper Clips

They are more durable than paper clips. However, they do not survive as long as metal paper clips.

The reason for this is that plastic paper clips break easily. They may bulge and snap if we try to bind more than 20 paper sheets securely.

Also, if you don’t use them carefully, they can easily shatter.

Paper Clips

These are likewise powerful, although they comprise pulp. As a result, these clips wear out readily.

They could become unusable if you splash liquid on them that you don’t like.

Clips made from paper are also ideal for holding documents, with the ability to hold up to 20 pages together.

You’ll want to make a better choice when stocking up on paper clips now that you understand how long they can endure.

Always keep the environment in mind.

Is It Harmful To Use Paper Clips?

Paper clips are entirely safe when used for their intended purpose.

Do they, however, carry any harmful compounds in addition to their core function?

Paper clips are safe to use because they are composed of paper.

When they are colored, however, the dye may include harmful substances.

As a result, make sure to dispose of them appropriately for recycling.

Also, don’t chew them, as chemicals may become embedded in your mouth after coming into touch with saliva.

Paper clips made of metal or steel may not be safe.

The reason for this is that it could contain lead.

As a result, never eat them or dispose of them in any way.

Plastic paper clips are the third option. Plastic products, as we all know, contain harmful compounds. Several of them are PFOA-incompatible.

Even worse, they aren’t recyclable.

As far as possible, avoid using plastic paper clips. They can damage the environment if you discard them.

Ways to Get Rid of Excess Paper Clips

Paper clips, on the other hand, have the advantage of being reusable.

So, in addition to recycling, think about repurposing them. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Make a large donation to a local school
  • Disburse at work; if placed in a public setting, the clips will entice people to collect from there rather than buy new ones
